Think of yourself as a brick wall (odd I know!). You wake up after a good night sleep and your wall is complete, a huge 6ft wall.

During the day you use a brick, one by one, for moving around, working, stressing, eating and exercising. At the end of the day, your brick wall is low, down to just ankle height.

When you go to sleep, your brick wall starts to rebuild but only if you get a good quality night sleep. If your sleep is broken, or you don’t have enough shuteye, you are starting a new day on a part built wall.

In order to start the day feeling refreshed, you need to build a 6ft wall every night.

5 ways to build your 6ft wall:

Turn off all electronic devices an hour before going to bed

Almost impossible nowadays, so if you have to use your phone or tablet, make sure you change the setting to ‘night mode’. This reduces the blue light emitted from the device.

Give up caffeine after 2pm

Yes, you read that right – 2pm! It can take 6 -10 hours to completely rid caffeine from your body. Swap to decaf coffee or try a chamomile tea before going to bed.

Unwind and relax

If you have trouble getting off to sleep, try having a warm bath with lavender oil, an hour or so before bedtime. Lavender is a natural relaxant, helping to slow the heart beat and calm the nervous system.

Bed time isn’t just for kids

Get yourself into a healthy sleep routine. Teach your body when it is time to shut down for the night, by dimming the lights, drawing the curtains and opening the window slightly. The same applies for the morning too – set your alarm and get up at the same time every day (including weekends).

Move more to sleep better

Regular physical activity is proven to help improve the quality of your sleep. Raise your heart rate for 30 minutes every day by going for a walk, playing with the children or attending an exercise class.
